OPB: NW Stories

NW Stories is an experimental video documentary series about intriguing people who share a connection to this region, produced in partnership between students at the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon and OPB.

In addition to befriending a pot-eating deer and wrangling an interview with Governor Kate Brown (unfortunately, these were separate instances), my team earned a National Mark of Excellence from the Society of Professional Journalists for our work featuring the inspired taxidermy artist, Chris Marley.

NW Stories is a documentary series about intriguing people who call this region home, broadcast in partnership with Oregon Public Broadcasting. In this segment: Salem-based artist Christopher Marley works with reclaimed organisms and minerals to create stunning works of art. A naturalist, Marley believes in letting the materials he uses in his pieces speak for themselves. "I feel a tremendous sense of gratitude and humility honestly for the opportunity that I have to work with these elements of nature that I believe are divinely created and divinely designed," Marley says. "When I make a piece or when we put together something that is perfect in every way, that I believe is a worthy homage to nature or to that organism or to whatever it is, that to me is what captivates me the most with what I do."
